This thorough research was done by Roger Dykehouse in 2011.

Chronological Listing of Blakely RBM Production And My Sources

  • 1912: Lyons Mach and Mfg Co established in Lyons, Mi. (Chr 9/28/52)

  • 1912/13: Edward B. Blakely was Chief Engr./Plant Manager at Sparta, MI Sears plant.
(web-Harvard 1917 alumni EBB auto bio) & (Arlan Carter’s book, The American Rowboat Motor)

However, he only used the “Blakely Engine Co” name (why?)

  • 1914 -early: EBB became Manager of Lyons and produced Gray/Blakely
Gearless motors. Ads appeared for Blakely, Gray. Anderson and
Admiral motors “built in Muskegon “.(Chr 8/10/14)

    H. R. Young became Plant Mgr.(1915 Mkg Directory & Chr 52)

  • 1914, 9/26: Lyons Mach & Mfg filed bankruptcy listing various outboard motor parts suppliers as creditors thus identifying Lyons as the builder of The Blakely engines with sub assemblies apparently supplied by some of the vendors.
  • The Chicago Flexible Shaft Co. was named in a 1914 Gray Motor Co. ad as building the gearless lower units
and Cross Gear and Engine Co. was likely a major source of the vertical shaft lower unit components. Various sources of iron and aluminum castings, steel forgings and hardware were identified.
(Chr 9/28/14 ), (“Iron Age” 10/5/14) and (Arlan Carter’s book)

  • 1915 May: “The Rudder” magazine (Web) covered the 1915 Chicago Boat Show with the following exhibitors:

to Gray Motor Co. He still lived in Muskegon at this time.
