Smith Electric Boat Propeller
Marine Electric Propeller Company
Minneapolis, Minn.

Samuel Newton Smith's 1896 patent for his "Boat Propelling Attachment" underwent some wonderful design improvements before being manufactured. The Marine Electric Propeller Company of
Minneapolis, Minnesota was created to produce the motor.

Following, a tiny excerpt from William McIsaac's thorough history of the company as published in The American Rowboat Motor:

"...the Monitor Electric Company of Chicago, Illinois (became) one of the first distributors of the Smith Electric.
...
Unfortunately, as typical of many electrics of the time, the Smith design proved to be flawed, even with a ventilated motor case it lost its ability to maintain reasonable operating temperatures."

The overheating issue eventually resulted in the Submerged Electric as Smith and Tracy Hatch work together to solve the problem.
